We began sailing and cruising with an excellent yacht built by Little Harbor Yacht, designed by Ted Hood. We were inspired the expedition yacht Pelagic skippered by Skip Novak, the cruising yacht innovations by Steve Dashew in his Deerfoot and Sundeer. We visited Kanter Yachts who built designs by Chuck Paine. We talked with Alloy Yachts, Pendennis, and others. We did not want a motoryacht, we wanted a high-performance cruising yacht. We did not want a sailboat patterned after the fragile yachts in the America's Cup or even Whitbread. Yacht Mona Lisa is designed to be a rugged strong expedition yacht first, and also fast sailboat. Since we wanted an expedition sailboat, a plastic hull was out of the question. So the choice was aluminum boat versus steel boat. Yacht Mona Lisa has an ice-reinforced aluminum hull. Although there are many rigs to chose from (sloop, yawl, ketch), we tested the AeroRig by Carbospars. We were totally impressed. AeroRig is THE ideal cruising rig for a husband and wife: it's fast and very easy to handle.
